CAF clears Nigeria, sanctions Cote d’Ivoire
The Super Eagles of Nigeria surpassed expectations after a stellar performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Playing a total of seven matches, they secured five victories, drew one, and suffered one defeat.
Unfortunately for Jose Peseiro and his Eagles, the only defeat came when it mattered most, in the final against host nation Cote d’Ivoire. And here's the kicker – CAF's investigations found zero wrongdoing on their part after the tournament.
But now, onto the spicy stuff. AFCON champions Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, and 2021 title winners Senegal are in hot water with CAF’s Disciplinary Board, per a media release on the body’s website.
The Mali Football Federation has been slapped with a hefty fine of 10,000 US Dollars due to unsporting behaviour by its players towards match officials during their clash with Cote d’Ivoire.
And to make matters worse, Hamari Traore received a four-match suspension for his unsporting conduct, with two matches suspended for a year.
Cote d’Ivoire didn't escape unscathed either as the Football Federation was fined 5,000 US Dollars for its team’s misconduct during their match against Senegal.
Ivorian star Krepin Diatta landed himself in some hot water for comments made post-match that brought CAF into disrepute. The result? A four-match suspension, with two matches suspended for a year, and a hefty fine of 10,000 US Dollars.
Former champions, Senegal also found themselves in the firing line, with its Football Federation fined 5,000 US Dollars for team misconduct.
A rollercoaster of AFCON drama with Nigeria emerging unscathed while champions Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, and Senegal feel the heat of CAF's disciplinary measures.
