FOOTBALL Gaspo, Vihiga Queens and Ulinzi Starlets in cutthroat fight for Women Premier League honors

Such is the intensity of the FKFPL title race among log leaders Gaspo Women FC, Vihiga Queens and Ulinzi Starlets that no stone is being left unturned by the three delicately balanced contenders to maximise their challenge.

The 2022/2023 Football Kenya Federation Women's Premier League (FKFWPL) is filled with thrills and frills as determined teams jostle for the holy grail that unlocks the newfound CAF women tournament and all its treasures.

With just six rounds of matches remaining until the end of the season, three teams are firmly locked in the race for the title, each with a chance at glory.

In a topsy-turvy campaign, Gaspo Women, Vihiga Queens, and Ulinzi Starlets still have a strong chance of lifting the title as a mere five points separate them.

In title showdowns between the three teams, every single point, goal, and result will count over the next five weeks.

So which team has the best chance of fending off challengers and fighting their way to the top prize?

Vihiga Queens

From the look of things, Vihiga Queens have positioned themselves better in second place, with a goal difference of two separating them from table leaders Gaspo Women.

On Sunday, they ensured they remained at par at 37 points from 16 matches with the Gatundu South-based team after they claimed maximum points against Bunyole Starlets by a solitary goal.

Queens have experience as they have been a dominant force in local football, having won four titles in the last five seasons.

Vihiga has retained most of the players that won last season league title, and they only made just additions to the team.

Kenyan international Janet Bundi and Ugandan duo Anita Namata and Winnie Babyrie have been instrumental in the successful second leg of the campaign.

Gaspo Women

Gaspo Women have also catapulted themselves back into the title race with a 3-0 win over Trans Nzoia Falcon, a victory that comes after being eliminated from the FKF Women's Cup.

Jacob Ghost's Mulee charges are the league's top goalscorers and have conceded the fewest.

That means Gaspo are in the best possible position regarding goal difference, and their title rivals will do well to catch up with their total of 43.

What is particularly noticeable is the way United spread its goals around its attack. If it is not Diana Wacera on the scoresheet, it is Mutukiza Wambui or Emily Okute.

Ulinzi Starlets

Many analysts may argue that the remaining six matches are so many as women's football in Kenya is full of surprises, meaning that third-placed Ulinzi Starlets still have a chance of winning the title.

Joseph Mwanzia's charges had an excellent outing during the weekend, where they recorded a massive 3-0 win over defending champions Thika Queens. The win was their ninth in the season, and they are just five points separating them from the joint-table leaders.

Starlets have around 30 players in the squad and have helped their cause in pursuit of the League crown.

They are still in the FKF Women's Cup, and with the depth in the squad, they can play ten more games between now and the start of June.
