The introduction, done on Mwananchi Day, Young Africans’ annual fans fete, saw all new signings introduced to the fans, including Gift Fred, who walked out of the tunnel donning shirt 37 as he waved to the fans.

For the first time in his career, Gift Fred was introduced in front of a capacity crowd and officially welcomed to the Young Africans family on Saturday.

The introduction, done on Mwananchi Day, Young Africans’ annual fans fete, saw all new signings introduced to the fans, including Gift Fred, who walked out of the tunnel donning shirt 37 as he waved to the fans.

On the pitch, Zambian forward Kennedy Musonda’s lob over veteran South African goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune at the stroke of halftime was the difference on the day as Young Africans head coach Angel Miguel Gamondi got his reign started on a winning note.

Gift Fred, who didn’t start the game like compatriot Khalid Aucho finally made his bow coming on at the start of the second half.

His ability to win aerial challenges, along with his calmness and confidence on the ball as he kept Kaizer Chiefs at bay, won over the mwananchi, who applauded some of the touches on the ball.

The win was the first for new head coach Miguel Angel Gamondi as he settles in ahead of a busy schedule with the 29-time Tanzanian league champions.

Next up for ‘Tiimu ya Mwananchi’ is the Tanzania Football Federation charity shield, which will involve four teams in Simba, Azam FC and Singida Fountain Gate FC, unlike the previous set-up where the league and FA Cup winner faced off.

Young Africans will be hoping to defend the Tanzanian season curtain raiser, having won it back-to-back.

International Club Friendly result

Young Africans 1 - 0 Kaizer Chiefs
