Fred, alongside Villa teammate Semakula, KCCA’s Geoffrey Wasswa and Vipers’ Rogers Torach, are the defenders selected by Micho from the Startimes Uganda Premier League.

Gift Fred’s inclusion in the Uganda Cranes 23-man squad to take on Algeria might not guarantee him playing time, but it is a step in the right direction.

The SC Villa captain was part of the group that left for Cameroon Friday morning and will be fighting for a place in the team that will play Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers on June 18.

But with players like Halid Lwaliwa and Geoffrey Wasswa in the squad, too, Fred will struggle to get a starting place on the team.

Kenneth Semakula and Gavin Kizito are the other players who have played at centre-back before and look like they are ahead of Fred in head coach Milutin Sredojevic’s pecking order.

“I want to thank the lord for the opportunity I have got to represent my nation,” Fred said after learning that he had made the cut.

“I thank the technical for trusting me for the upcoming task, and I promise to do my best as a patriotic person, and the results will go our way in our match with Algeria,” he added.

Fred, alongside Villa teammate Semakula, KCCA’s Geoffrey Wasswa and Vipers’ Rogers Torach, are the defenders selected by Micho from the Startimes Uganda Premier League.

“Every player wants to represent their country, and I think it is one of the things that make a player successful, representing your country.

“I thank FUFA for the best things they have done for the league and for managing to select players alongside the coach to complete this task.”

Uganda sits third in Group F with four points, the same as Tanzania, who are second and two more than Niger.

With Algeria already qualified, the other three teams in the group must fight for the one remaining slot.

Tanzania, Uganda and Niger are all still in the running for the slot.

Defeat to Algeria could all but end Uganda’s hopes of making the finals.
