Senegalese forward Habib Diallo's goals against Reims put him in Strasbourg and Ligue 1's history books
Strasbourg’s Senegalese forward Habib Diallo has taken his goalscoring exploits to greater heights, earning himself a place in Ligue 1 history after a brilliant brace in the club’s 2-0 victory over Reims on Sunday.
Diallo strikes twice to give Strasbourg hope in relegation battle
Diallo, just returning from a suspension, showed what Strasbourg had missed in his absence with two superb goals against Reims to help the club register their third win in five games as they continue their fight against relegation from Ligue 1.
Diallo struck in the first and 37th minutes of the match to register his 16th and 17th goals of the 2022/23 Ligue 1 season, thereby equalling one longstanding league record and setting another.
Diallo makes Ligue 1 history with brace against Reims
Diallo’s first goal after only 16 seconds was his second goal in the first minute of Ligue 1, becoming only the second player in the 21st century to score two goals inside one minute in the same Ligue 1 season.
He previously scored after 13 seconds against Montpellier earlier in the season and his goal after 16 seconds against Reims meant that he equalled Brazillian forward Jussie who scored inside the first minute of two Ligue 1 fixtures in the 2011/12 season while playing for Bordeaux.
Diallo’s second goal, the 17th of the campaign, also saw him become the first Strasbourg player to score that many goals in a single Ligue 1 season this century, eclipsing Ludovic Ajorque’s record of 16 goals scored in the 2020/21 season.
Diallo has been in incredible form, especially as the season draws to a close, and if Strasbourg avoid relegation, they will have their Senegalese forward to thank for their survival after his hot streak has helped them secure vital points at the tail end of the season.
