The question of who is better between the Portuguese phenomenon and the soft-spoken Argentine has dominated the minds of football fans everywhere for the past decade and will persist into the future.

The duo may be in different orbits, with Messi plying trade in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami while Ronaldo continues to conquer the Saudi Pro League with Al Nassr but how do their stars compare now that they are veterans in the game?

The details provided below, have been broken down into numbers, including goals and assists, over their past 100 appearances for club and country according to Planet Football.

Ronaldo’s last 100 appearances go back to August 2023. The then 38-year-old scored twice in Al Nassr’s Arab Champions Cup final victory over Al Hilal. Coincidentally, it is the only title that the former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward has laid his hands on since setting foot in Saudi Arabia in early 2023.

At 40, Ronaldo has reiterated his desire to reach 1000 goals as much as he chose to wind down his career in a less competitive league.

Ronaldo, who has had the luxury of playing for Juventus in the Serie A, still averages almost a goal per game – having notched 89 over his last 100 appearances for Al Nassr and Portugal. Ronaldo's assists have reduced now that he plays as a No. 9. His only task is to score as opposed to previously when he was the creator-in-chief playing on the left wing.

He has notched only half as many assists in his last 100 games.

Messi on the other hand, has scored 15 fewer goals over his last 100 appearances in comparison to Ronaldo. Over that period Messi has scored more non-penalty goals – averaging one every 120 minutes compared to the every 128 minutes averaged by Ronaldo.

A large proportion of Ronaldo's goals have been penalties, too – with 21 of his last 89 spot-kicks. However, despite being 37, the Argentine has struggled more with injuries and knocks in recent times and his last 100 appearances stretch back to October 2022 – when he was still at Paris Saint-Germain.

He left Paris after guiding the French club to a second successive Ligue 1 title. He helped deliver Inter Miami’s first-ever piece of silverware – the 2023 Leagues Cup and lifted the Supporters’ Shield after his first full season out in the United States.

Messi captained Argentina to the 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar before retaining the Copa America last summer. Messi has notched 74 goals and 42 assists in his last 100 matches for club and country.

Here’s how Messi and Ronaldo’s records stack up against one another over their last 100 outings.
