The former Gunners star may have had a bitter divorce with his ex-wife that almost ruined his life but the relationship yielded a son who has now joined Chelsea.

Former Arsenal defender Emmanuel Eboue has been rebuilding his life since a costly divorce that nearly left him bankrupt but that relationship seems to have produced some positives.

This is after his son Mathis Eboue was signed by Premier League giants Chelsea this month, making a major step in his career, as he looks to follow in the footsteps of his father.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano confirmed last week that Chelsea finalised the transfer of the teenager from Watford after the midfielder attracted interest from a host of clubs.

"High quality attacking player, Eboue is former Arsenal player’s son — now can be considered #CFC player. Paperwork done, one more for Chelsea Academy long term plan,” Romano posted on X while announcing the transfer of the 15-year-old.

The youngster was born in England where he lives and has featured for England U16 as he continues his development and there is now hope that he will blossom into a star player.

Mathis is the son of Eboue and his ex-wife Aurelie Bertrand, who had a bitter divorce with him, with reports saying the former Ivory Coast defender had ‘gone bankrupt and rendered homeless’ after she took a huge chunk of his wealth.

Eboue retired from football in 2020 and has since remarried and rebuilt his life, tying the knot with his childhood sweetheart Stephanie Boede, having returned to Ivory Coast where he owns and runs a football academy.

While he is miles away, the 41-year-old will be delighted that his son is making waves in England with the possibility of a career in the Premier League now real if he can impress his coaches at Chelsea.

Eboue joined Arsenal in 2004 from Belgian side Beveren and played for the club for over six years, featuring in 214 games while scoring 10 goals for Arsene Wenger’s men, before moving to Turkish giants Galatasaray in 2011 where he enjoyed a trophy-laden three-year stint.

He won 79 caps for the Ivory Coast, scoring three goals, and was part of the star-studded squad that finished second in the AFCON 2006 and 2012.
