Gor Mahia coach Johnathan McKinstry has given advice to goalkeeper Caleb Otieno who has been praised for his performances in the wake of Kevin Omondi’s suspension.
Gor Mahia coach Johnathan McKinstry has advised young goalkeeper Caleb Otieno to keep his feet on the ground if he wants to succeed at the club.
Otieno has been thrust to the limelight in the wake of the suspension of Gor Mahia first choice goalkeeper Kevin Omondi who was shown a red card against AFC Leopards in the Mashemeji Derby on April 21.
The 21-year-old was thrown into the deep end in the 35th minute and had an impressive performance, especially in claiming aerial balls while bringing calmness to the backline. He equally had a good game in his first league start of the season away to Murang’a Seal on Saturday when Gor Mahia won 3-1 last weekend.

AFC Leopards boss praises Levis Opiyo after goalkeeping heroics in win over Bandari
Opiyo had been under pressure after his howler cost AFC Leopards the match against Gor Mahia, but found himself getting serenaded by the fans for his Bandari heroics on Sunday.
Following the good outings, McKinstry feels K’Ogalo have a massive talent on their hands but has urged the youngster to keep working if he has to overcome the competition for a starting place at Gor Mahia.
“Caleb, we get to see him every day in training and he is young. He has a huge career in front of him. A lot of teams are very hesitant to pick young goalkeepers but we know the quality,” said McKinstry.
“Boniface Oluoch [Gor Mahia goalkeeper coach] is working with them every day and Caleb has huge talent but it does not mean he should rest and relax, he has to keep pushing.

Gor Mahia coach details what his side need to retain their league title
Gor Mahia coach Johnathan McKinstry has explained what his teams need to do to claim a record extending 21st league title following their SportPesa Derby victory on Saturday.
“He made some good saves and towards the end [against Murang’a] he managed the game well. You don’t normally associate game management with young players and he is going to develop so no pressure.”
Besides Omondi, Gor Mahia also have the experienced Gad Mathews in their ranks as well as youngster Dolf Junior Owino which shows the kind of competition Otieno is up against.
He can, however, draw inspiration from Omondi’s rise to prominence after he became the club’s undisputed No.1 ahead of Mathews, who won the Golden Glove last season, before injuries and some off-field issues blighted his 2023-24 campaign.
