K’Ogalo were set to go home empty-handed after their title triumph until their sponsor and patron came to their rescue

Gor Mahia will not go home empty-handed after all following their title win as they have been awarded a total of Ksh5 million by their sponsors SportPesa and patron former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

SportPesa, who are the club’s shirt sponsors, have promised to give Gor a Ksh3.5 million bonus for winning the league while the Opposition Leader gave his donation of Ksh1.5 million to the players immediately after the match.

Gor were set to go home empty-handed after Football Kenya Federation president Nick Mwendwa revealed last month that this season’s title winners will not get any cash rewards as the federation’s coffer’s ‘are empty.’

“We are big on investment in sports and whenever we send one of our children to go out for a trophy hunt, definitely we have to go back to our coffers to look at what would we can do in return for them,” said SportPesa PR and Advertising Manager Willis Ojuang.

“We know the federation does not have something to give as prize money but definitely as SportPesa, we have allocated something, minimum five percent of the annual sponsorship to the club.

“This had been a good performance, we will be looking at reviewing the sponsorship significantly to the club going forward. Gor Mahia will get up to ksh3.5 million for winning the league, this as a bonus.”

The players had been handed Odinga’s reward in cash in the dressing room after the match with the Azimio La Umoja leader later calling for support towards community clubs.

“Congratulations to Gor Mahia on their 20th league title, a wonderful achievement! Bravo! It's high time we all rally behind community football clubs and give them the support they deserve,” he said via a Twitter post.

Gor claimed the title by just one point over second-placed Tusker after coming from behind to beat Nairobi City Stars 4-1 at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.
