Gor Mahia hoping to confirm 21st league title as they face tricky challenge against relegation-battling Muhoroni Youth in Murang'a on Sunday

FKFPL champions Gor Mahia will be hoping they can seal the title once and for all when they face Muhoroni Youth at the SportPesa Arena in Murang’a from 3 PM on Sunday.

Gor have largely maintained their position for much of the season ever since getting there in late 2023 after Posta Rangers had started the league on fire, and now know that a single point will be enough to claim a record 21st league crown.

The win would also be a parting gift for Johnathan McKinstry, who has agreed to join the Gambia National Team upon sealing the title for the club.

K’ogalo has been in impeccable form for much of the season. Despite drawing their last match against KCB 0-0 in Murang’a, they have won the other four matches, and only another stale 0-0 draw against Kakamega Homeboyz right after the international break prevented them from getting maximum points since their loss to Bandari in Mombasa.

Having accumulated 64 points, they could go on to win the title by 76 points, six higher than the 70-point mark they achieved last season. Second-placed side Tusker can only achieve a maximum of 64, given they sit on 56 after 31 games.

They are now all but certain to take part in the CAF Champions League next season.

“We have five games to go and we need two wins to confirm the championship. We are not looking at what others do even if someone turns and says our rivals dropped points and we do not need two wins, just one win. We are working to pick up points,” said McKinstry.

“We want to do better than last season. Last year we got 70 points, this year we want more. Last year we had 18 clean sheets, this is our 19th clean sheet of the season so we have improved in that statistic.

“We want all our statistics to improve as a team because if we win the league but do less than last season, a bit of us will not feel so good about that.”

For Muhoroni Youth, things are not looking rosy. They sit 17th in the league on 30 points, one point behind Shabana who have played a game more, and are in the playoff place.

Muhoroni know that a win or draw over the champions-elect will go a long way in helping them avoid the drop, something they were able to navigate last season under coach Charles Odera.

They have drawn three of their last five matches, but a win would put them back in the playoff position.
