Initially touted to be part of the competition under the name "CAF Super League," the event has now been rebranded as the African Football League, showcasing the continent's rich football heritage.

The much-anticipated kick-off date for the new eight-team African Football League has been confirmed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Making the announcement during the Confederation of Africa Football's (CAF) General Assembly in Abidjan, Infantino revealed that the competition would commence on 20th October.

Infantino, in his address to delegates, expressed his confidence in the success of this scaled-down version while hinting at the potential for expansion in the future.

"It will have eight great teams, which will be followed in the future with a bigger version," stated Infantino. "We have to invest in African club football as well as national team football. It is our responsibility, duty, and task, and with the work and contribution of all of us as a team, we will succeed."

As the competition draws near, fans and pundits eagerly await the formal confirmation of the participating teams by CAF.

While the official announcement is yet to be made, a reliable source close to CAF has revealed the likely contenders.

According to the insider, the eight teams expected to grace the African Football League are South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns, Petro Atletico from Angola, TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Al Ahly from Egypt, Horoya from Guinea, Wydad Casablanca from Morocco, Simba from Tanzania, and Esperance from Tunisia.

However, one team that may not feature in the inaugural edition is Gor Mahia, as the world football governing body has deviated from the original proposal of 24 teams.

Despite initial reports suggesting their participation, it appears their fate hangs in the balance.

Gor Mahia, one of Kenya's most successful football clubs, has a rich history and a dedicated fan base.

Their absence from the list of potential participants would undoubtedly disappoint many loyal supporters who had hoped to see their beloved team compete on the continental stage.

Nonetheless, until CAF releases the final list of teams, there remains a glimmer of hope for Gor Mahia and their devoted fans.
