Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has apologised to Steven Gerrard for the "unnecessary and stupid comments" he made in his press conference over the weekend.

Pep Guardiola, while defending Manchester City against financial allegations, made comments about Steven Gerrard's infamous slip during a Premier League game between Liverpool and Chelsea in 2014.

Guardiola questioned hypothetically if City were to blame for Gerrard's slip at Anfield in 2014 which ultimately handed the incentive to Man City in the title race.

Pep Guardiola has apologised to Steven Gerrard for his comments

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the game against Arsenal on Wednesday, Guardiola confirmed he had apologise to Gerrard privately and regrets his comments. He said:

“He knows how I admire him for what he has done in the country where I live. I defended my club but I didn’t represent my club well with my stupid comments. I am ashamed.

“I have apologised to him privately but, like the comment was public, my apology must be public as well.”

Man City face Arsenal next in the Premier League and a victory will take them to the top of the table, albeit having played a game more than the Gunners.

Guardiola's men got back to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa at the Etihad over the weekend thanks to goals from Rodri, Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan.
