Erling Haaland is reportedly under investigation after an incident with Manchester City's mascot
Manchester City star Erling Haaland has found himself at the center of controversy following allegations that he left the club’s mascot, Moonbeam, with “suspected whiplash and concussion.”
The woman inside the costume claims the 6ft 4in striker playfully struck her on the head before a match against Southampton in October, leading to injuries that have now sparked a police complaint and club investigation.
Police investigate Haaland incident
The woman, who worked as a temporary employee for Manchester City, alleges that after posing for a photo, Haaland delivered playful blows to her head before leaning on it.
Initially left in shock, she later experienced vomiting, neck pain, and headaches, prompting a medical checkup by the club’s first-team doctor and a visit to Salford Royal’s A&E, where her symptoms were noted, though a CT scan showed no damage.
Despite reporting the incident to the club’s safeguarding chief, she claims her concerns were laughed off, with the response: "At least you can say Erling Haaland hit you."
A subsequent internal investigation, led by Manchester City’s health and safety head Paul Kenyon, reviewed CCTV footage and concluded that Haaland did not cause her injuries, citing that he merely gives a light touch on the head as a gesture of recognition.
However, the woman has since filed an assault complaint with Greater Manchester Police, who are now reviewing the case. Manchester City, for their part, maintain that their investigation found no evidence to support her claims, and police have not taken further action at this stage.
Job termination sparks further controversy
Adding to the woman’s frustration, she claims that following the incident, her contract was not renewed after working in the club’s ticket office.
She was asked to reapply for her position and undergo a half-day interview, but ultimately, she was unsuccessful.
“I have never had any complaints from any of the managers about my work before,” she stated, expressing her belief that the situation contributed to her job loss.
Manchester City, however, have refuted any wrongdoing, insisting that her departure had no connection to the alleged incident with Haaland.
Meanwhile, the police complaint remains unresolved, leaving questions over whether this unusual controversy will take a more serious turn for one of football’s biggest stars.
