Kenya suffered a shock 1-0 loss to lowly Mauritius on Sunday, rekindling memories of some of their lowest moments in history
Harambee Stars suffered the embarrassment of losing to minnows Mauritius following their 1-0 defeat in their Four-Nations tournament on Sunday.
Kenya were poor in all aspects of the game as Mauritius, playing in front of their fans, run rings around them akin to a footballing powerhouse in the world.
Engin Firat’s men had no answers for their opponents who laid siege at their goal with goalkeeper Bryne Odhiambo, at fault for the goal, making a number of crucial saves to keep the scoreline down.
The loss to a side ranked 180 in the world, 78 places below them, brings to the fore some of the most embarrassing defeats suffered by Harambee Stars down the years.
Kenya 13-2 Ghana
The Black Stars of Ghana whipped Kenya 13-2 in an international friendly in what remains Harambee Stars’ worst defeat in history.
The match took place at Jamhuri Park Stadium on the afternoon of Saturday December 11, 1965 in front of the late President Jomo Kenyatta. Kenya scored the opener in the third minute but Ghana fought from behind to take the lead.
The Black Stars led 8-1 at halftime, both Osei Kofi and Kofi Pare scoring four goals each, by the close of the half.
After the break, Kenya made it 8-2 via the penalty spot, before Pare took his tally to six with two more, while Frank Odoi had a brace, added to Jones Attoquayefio’s strike.
Kuwait 5-0 Kenya
In November 2009, Kenya faced Kuwait in a friendly match ahead of the 2010 World Cup qualifiers and were thrashed 5-0 in the game played in Egypt.
Kenya’s squad largely comprised of local-based players, with Allan Wanga, Patrick Osiako and Austin Makacha the only foreign-based players but still, a lot more was expect from the squad given the calibre of the opposition.
Kenya 1-4 Eritrea
Under former coach Francis Kimanzi, Harambee Stars lost heavily to a lowly Eritrea in the semi-final of the 2019 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup in Uganda with allegations of match-fixing being made.
This was the second loss to Eritrea by Kenya, having suffered a 2-1 home defeat to the minnows in September 2006 during an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
India 3-0 Kenya
Just months after Football Kenya Federation had hired Frenchman coach Sebastien Migne, he led the team to a 3-0 loss to India in June 2018.
This was in the final of the Hero Intercontinental Cup where Kenya had been invited alongside New Zealand and Chinese Taipei.
Even though India were ranked higher than Kenya at the time, it was still deemed embarrassing since the Asian nation are considered football underdogs.
Zanzibar 3-1 Kenya
Yet another CECAFA Senior Challenge shocker, Harambee Stars were beaten 3-1 by a lowly Zanzibar in the 2015 tournament.
It was the first loss Kenya had suffered in the hands of Zanzibar in 35 years, leaving their fate in the tournament hanging in the balance as they awaited other results to see if they would qualify as best losers.
Former KCB striker Jacob Keli scored the only goal for Kenya in a match coach Bobby Williamson made wholesale changes after collecting four points from their opening two matches.
Kenya sneaked through to the quarter-finals but were eliminated by Rwanda on post-match penalties, with the Zanzibar result having a huge bearing on their run in the tournament.
