Sadiq is hoping to revitalise his career after suffering several serious injuries as a Real Sociedad player
Real Sociedad’s manager, Imanol Alguacil, has come to the defence of Nigerian striker Umar Sadiq amidst growing criticism over his lack of goals.
Despite the team’s slow start to the season and disappointing performances, Alguacil has praised Sadiq’s professionalism and commitment, stating his belief that the forward is giving his all to turn things around.
Alguacil backs Sadiq amid criticism
With Real Sociedad currently languishing at the bottom of La Liga, having secured only four points from their first five games, frustration among fans and critics has been mounting.
Injuries to key players such as Mikel Oyarzabal and Brais Mendez have further compounded the team's struggles.
In the absence of several first-team regulars, Sadiq has been given an opportunity to step up, but his inability to find the back of the net in four games this season has sparked criticism.
However, Alguacil remains firm in his support for the Nigerian striker, stating, “I have never said anything bad about him. On the contrary, he is an example of professionalism.
“In the face of adversity, he has not stopped working. Despite injuries and the lack of goals, he hasn't lowered his head.”
Sadiq still lacking goals at Real Sociedad
Despite Sadiq’s dedication, Alguacil acknowledges that the results are not yet there for the 27-year-old striker.
Speaking before the match against Mallorca, Algucil added, “He has made a tremendous effort to lose weight and get in shape this preseason. I greatly appreciate his effort and commitment.
“Now I ask for performance, and it is true that the numbers are missing. But in everything else, he is giving everything.”
Sadiq, who joined the Basque club in 2022, has struggled to replicate his Almeria form, particularly since suffering a major injury last season.
He has scored only four goals in 43 games for Real Sociedad but will be looking to improve his numbers after overcoming adversity, starting with the match against Mallorca.
