Headache for Finidi as star Super Eagles forward sustains injury

Finidi George faces a squad selection dilemma as a key Super Eagles forward sustains an injury ahead of World Cup qualifying clashes against South Africa and Benin Republic.

New Super Eagle boss Finidi George already has fires to put out hours after his unveiling, as Samuel Chukwueze is now a doubt due to injury.

Finidi is set to announce his first squad list as permanent head coach for the coming World Cup qualifiers in June. However, he might have to find solutions, with Chukwueze’s inclusion a doubt.

What happened

The 24-year-old former Villarreal winger forced a half-time substitution from Stefano Pioli after sustaining an injury in the 5-1 drubbing of Cagliari this past weekend.

According to MilanNews, Chukwueze underwent tests after the injury, and the result was worrying. The tests confirmed that he suffered a first-degree injury to the biceps femoris muscle of his left thigh.

He will undergo another test next week, an MRI, which will be used to ascertain the evolution of the injury. With only two games left in the campaign, Chukwueze's season is almost certainly over.

With Super Eagles duty up in a month, Chukwueze's availability will be determined by the MRI test scheduled for next week. Should his recuperation go according to plan, he could be available to Finidi for the qualifier games against South Africa and the Benin Republic.

However, the update on his status might come in too late, as Finidi is expected to name his squad for next month's matches this week.
