Denis Onyango’s Mamelodi Sundowns are chasing a second CAF Champions League title in the club’s history.
The CAF interclub competitions are at the penultimate stage, and for Uganda’s case, the possibility of having two winners in the respective competitions is viable now more than ever.
Denis Onyango’s Mamelodi Sundowns are chasing a second CAF Champions League title in the club’s history.
At the same time, Khalid Aucho’s Young Africans have already made history by reaching their first-ever CAF Confederations Cup semifinal. Moreover, they are on the brink of reaching their first final ever.
Onyango became the first Ugandan player to win the CAF Champions League in 2016 as Sundowns beat Zamalek 3-1 on aggregate in a two-legged final to claim it.
Seven years later, Onyango, still with Sundowns, who are in the semifinals against the defending champions Wydad Casablanca, has a chance to make another final with the Brazilians having played out a goalless draw against Casablanca.
The second leg is set for Saturday in Pretoria, and Rhulani Mokwena’s charges are going all out, having missed out in 2019 at the same stage when they lost to Al Ahly.
For Khalid Aucho, it is his first time to go this far in the CAF interclub competitions; his early stint at Gor Mahia only saw him feature in the preliminary round.
However, with Young Africans now in the semifinals of the Confederations Cup and with a 2-0 aggregate lead against Marumo Gallants, the possibility of reaching the final exists.
Young Africans going on to win the competition will make Aucho the first Ugandan player to win the Confederations Cup but the second to lift a CAF inter-club competition after Denis Onyango.
If he goes on to win the Champions League, the former Cranes skipper will become the first player from East Africa to win two CAF Champions League titles.
