How Djed Spence's remarkable Tottenham revival sparked tri-nation 'tug of war' between England, Kenya & Jamaica

A year ago, Djed Spence was struggling for suitors after flopping on loan at Leeds United from Tottenham, but his remarkable rise is now creating a tug of war for his national team services by three nations.

A year ago, Djed Spence was an outcast struggling to find his place in English football.

Now, his career resurgence at Tottenham Hotspur has not only thrust him into contention for an England call-up but also reignited discussions about his international allegiance, with Kenya and Jamaica both laying claim to his services.

Spence’s journey from reject to one of the Premier League’s most in-form defenders has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Cast aside by Leeds United midway through a disappointing loan spell last season, Spence found himself unwanted at Spurs, with manager Ange Postecoglou unconvinced of his work ethic and decision-making.

The London club was even willing to offload him for as little as £10 million, but no suitors emerged.

That all changed when he took a chance on an unorthodox move to Serie A’s Genoa. The Italian club, initially interested in him as a sweetener for the Radu Dragusin deal, ended up playing a pivotal role in his transformation.

Spence thrived in Genoa’s 3-5-2 system, shining in big matches against AC Milan and Juventus while also maturing off the pitch. By the time he returned to Spurs, he was a different player—a more disciplined, driven version of himself.

Injuries to first-choice left-back Destiny Udogie provided Spence with an unexpected opportunity, albeit in an unnatural position. Yet, he seized it with both hands. Since his first Premier League start on December 15, he has been a mainstay in Postecoglou’s squad, proving to be one of Tottenham’s best ball carriers and duel winners.

His rapid improvement hasn’t gone unnoticed, with Postecoglou himself praising his turnaround: “The penny drops at different times for different players. He’s been brilliant,” he said as quoted on The Times.

With his resurgence, the debate over his international future has been reignited. Spence was born in England but is eligible to represent both Kenya and Jamaica through his parents.

England, under newly appointed head coach Thomas Tuchel, may look to integrate him into their setup soon.

However, Kenya and Jamaica have been keenly monitoring his rise, knowing that a player of his quality could be transformative for their national teams.

Jamaica, in particular, has been aggressive in recruiting dual-nationality players, successfully convincing the likes of Michail Antonio and Demarai Gray to switch allegiances.

Meanwhile, Kenya, who are now under the stewardship of former Man United assistant coach Benni McCarthy,, would benefit significantly from a player of Spence’s caliber.

For now, Spence remains focused on his club form, recently netting his first Premier League goal in a dominant 4-1 win over Ipswich Town.

Yet, as his remarkable comeback story continues to unfold, a tug-of-war over his international allegiance could soon take center stage, adding another fascinating chapter to one of football’s most compelling redemption arcs.
