Ingavi, who is expected to be part of the side that will represent Kenya at the U-20 AFCON in Ivory Coast next April, has signed his first professional contract in the United States.

Kenya U20 striker Louise Ingavi has opened up on his decision to join NCAA Division II side Saginaw Valley State University FC, citing inspiration from Harambee Stars assistant captain Joseph Okumu's journey through American soccer to top European leagues.

Ingavi signed a two-year deal with Saginaw last Friday, leaving Montverde Academy, where he had been honing his skills since late 2023.

The move marks a significant step in his football journey, with the young forward determined to carve his own success story.

"Okumu's rise from South Africa to the US, then to elite European football, is a source of motivation," Ingavi said as quoted on Mozzart Sport.

"He was patient, hardworking, and adapted well to new environments. He is disciplined and makes the most of every opportunity. I see myself following a similar path."

Ingavi, who played an instrumental role in helping Salim Babu’s Kenya U-20 side Rising Stars qualify for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations set to take place in Ivory Coast this April, had multiple offers on the table.

Eastern Florida, St. Leo University, NNU, and Western Florida were among the clubs vying for his signature.

However, it was Saginaw’s persistent interest and structured program that convinced him to make the move.

"Saginaw tabled a good deal. Their coach, Louis Barrow, has been in constant communication with me since last year, which made a big difference. Their program is strong, and the facilities are top-notch," he said.

Ingavi sees his time at Saginaw as an opportunity to showcase his talent to a broader audience, just as Okumu did. The French-based centre-back used his stint in the US to catch the attention of European clubs, eventually securing a move to Swedish side IF Elfsborg from USL outfit Real Monarchs.

After excelling in Sweden, Okumu later joined Belgian side KAA Gent before earning a high-profile transfer to Ligue 1 club Stade de Reims in 2023. His rise serves as a blueprint for Ingavi, who is eager to make the most of his American adventure.

With his sights set on professional success, Ingavi, who was the lead striker for Kenya during the CECAFA U-18 Boys’ Championships held in Kisumu and Kakamega in December 2023, is determined to make an impact at Saginaw and keep his dream of reaching the top leagues alive.

"This is just the beginning. I know the journey ahead requires hard work and patience, but I’m ready for the challenge," he concluded.
