A legendary Ghanaian football player has acknowledged his pride in never losing a game against his long-time rival Nigeria.

The Chelsea legend has played in several competitions for Ghana, including the World Cup and the African Cup of Nations.

While representing Ghana, Michael Essien never took home a trophy, although he finished third in 2008 and second in 2010 in the AFCON.

After 12 years of playing for the Ghanaian national team, Essien announced his retirement from international football.

Essien boasts about record

Essien discussed his rivalry with Nigeria and his delight at keeping an undefeated record in an interview with Joy Sports via Modern Ghana.

He said, “My favourite game will be against Nigeria in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations. I never lost against Nigeria while on the pitch.

“I played in the friendly in London. I did not play in the match at the 2006 AFCON. If I’m on the pitch, we don’t lose. We were losing (referring to the 2008 AFCON match) and I scored.”

After playing two games against the Super Eagles, the former Chelsea midfielder emerged victorious, setting a record at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a game-winning goal.

In the 2008 quarterfinal, Essien's goal helped Ghana defeat Nigeria 2-1, and it is still one of his favourite memories from his time playing for his country.

The former Black Stars player scored nine goals in 59 appearances for Ghana, and he played a key role in the team's 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification.

Meanwhile, Ghana have struggled in the last couple of years in tournaments and are currently behind Nigeria in the latest FIFA ranking.
