I want that next step - Arsenal striker target wants dream move to title-contending club

A reported Mikel Arteta target is keen on joining a club that competes for titles, opening the door to a potential move to Arsenal.

Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha has expressed his ambition to compete for titles and has hinted at a potential departure from the club.

The 25-year-old Brazilian forward, who signed a new contract with Wolves in February, has made it clear that he wants to "take the next step" in his career.

Cunha joined Wolves from Atletico Madrid in January 2023 and has become a key player for the club.

Cunha’s transfer hint?

Cunha is Wolves’ top scorer this season, with 15 goals in 29 appearances. Despite his new contract, the Brazil international revealed that he had received offers to leave the club in the past.

The forward’s decision to stay at Wolves was motivated by the club's difficult situation in the Premier League. He felt he could not leave the club while they were in the relegation zone.

However, now that Wolves are close to securing their Premier League status, Cunha has made it clear that he wants to move on to a club where he can compete for major honours.

“I had a lot of offers but I wouldn’t feel well if I had done it (left Wolves),” Cunha told The Guardian. “Some things you can’t control but I couldn’t leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone.

“Now, we’re close to achieving our goal (of staying up). But I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.”

Cunha's comments have raised questions about his long-term future at Wolves. The Brazilian forward is under contract until 2029, but his ambition to play for a club that can challenge for titles could see him move on in the summer.

Will Arsenal swoop for Cunha after striker’s transfer hint?

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have previously been linked with a move for the forward, given the club’s public desire to sign a centre-forward to bolster attacking options.

The Gunners were linked with a move for Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and Spain captain Alvaro Morata, who eventually joined Galatasaray on loan, but they could not reinforce their forward line in January.

Despite limited information about Arsenal making a bid for Cunha, the Brazilian’s comments could provide the Gunners with something to consider as they approach the summer window.

What next for Arsenal?

Arsenal entered the international break 12 points behind Liverpool with nine matches left.

The Gunners will next face Fulham on April 1.

What next for Cunha?

Cunha is currently serving a four-game suspension due to an incident of violent conduct during Wolves’ fifth-round FA Cup defeat to Bournemouth earlier this month. He will not be eligible to return until the match against Tottenham Hotspur on April 13.
