Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit slams Caicedo and Lavia for rejecting Liverpool for Chelsea.

Retired footballer Emmanuel Petit has criticised the decision of Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo to join Chelsea over Liverpool, claiming that a transfer to the Reds was wiser in a sporting sense.

Petit played a similar position to the duo in his playing days and was a Chelsea player from 2001-2004.

What happened

Jurgen Klopp's side lost out on two of their key transfer targets, Caicedo and Lavia, in their bid to sign a defensive midfielder following the departure of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to the Saudi Professional League.

The Blues themselves were keen on bringing in a player in the position and were successful in signing the duo, brushing off interest from the Merseysiders.

What Petit said

The former Arsenal midfielder believes that Liverpool have a better sporting project than Chelsea and hinted that a superior financial offer was why the duo opted for the move to West London.

He went on to state that if the decision had been his, he would have joined Liverpool and that there is less pressure to deal with at Anfield.

"Caicedo signed for Chelsea when he was linked with Liverpool, just like Romeo Lavia. I'm not going to say anything stupid, but we all know why they went to Chelsea,” He said, per Liverpool Echo.

“Sportingly, the best decision right now would be to go to Liverpool. If I am Caicedo or Lavia, I'm going to Liverpool instead of Chelsea because I can't see a clear plan for what is going on at Chelsea. 35 players? Come on. How many players do they need? It's going to be a nightmare just like what happened last season.

“When you look at Liverpool there is one area in particular that needs to be upgraded and that is the midfield area even though they signed new players in [Dominik] Szoboszlai and [Alexis] Mac Allister.

"If I was Caicedo I would have signed for Liverpool because I would reunite with Mac Allister and I would play with less pressure because so many of their midfield players have left the club.

"For me, the answer is very easy. If you ask somebody why Caicedo and Lavia decided to go to Chelsea, the answer is just money. Money talks for the clubs and for the players."
