Tata Martino has given an update on Lionel Messi's injury status ahead of Saturday's game against DC United.

Inter Miami head coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino has shed light on Lionel Messi's fitness and potential return to the pitch ahead of the game against D.C. United on Saturday.

Messi was ruled out of the midweek game against Orlando City at Inter Miami's stadium due to a left-knee injury sustained in the previous match against CF Montréal.

Martino revealed the decision to sideline Messi stemmed from his left-knee injury, and not a decision to rest the Argentine World Cup winner.

Lionel Messi bags 2 goals and 1 assist as Inter Miami bounces back with a 3-1 win against Nashville.

"In the case of Wednesday, it was strictly the knock to the knee that left him out of the match," Martino said.

"There was no intention of resting him. He was feeling well, but then suffered the injury and could not maneuver well with his leg, it bothered him. Yesterday, the injury still bothered him.

"In general, we take into consideration his age and physique the way we do with every player. Obviously, age is a theme with Messi but everyone deals with physical wear or overload."
