The former Gor Mahia midfielder joined the club back in January.

Three months after joining Japanese outfit Sagan Tosu, Kenyan international Anthony Akumu finally made his debut in the barren draw against Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo in the J-League Cup.

The 30-year-old endured a troubled five months after he was released by South African giants Kaizer Chiefs back in July 2022 but was handed a lifeline following his move to Sagan Tosu in January.

Sagan Tosu has had a history with Kenyans after they signed former Tusker FC forward Ismael Dunga back in 2021 but he endured a disastrous spell which led to him being released back in December 2022.

Akumu was yet to make an appearance for Tosu since joining in January as he also failed to make the matchday squads in any of their games this season with the league heading to Matchday Four.

The former Gor Mahia midfielder was trusted with a start by head coach Kenta Kawai in the clash against Sapporo as he slotted into the middle of the park.

Tosu were chasing shadows in the first half as Masaya Tashiro, Yoshiki Narahara and Akumu got into the referee’s book for cynical fouls.

With little goal-mouth action in the opening half, both teams went into the halftime break locked on a barren draw with Sapporo making double changes at the start of the closing stanza.

Akumu was however hooked off in the 56th minute as Tosu opted to protect him from a second yellow card with So Kawahara coming on in his place.

What Tosu were avoiding eventually happened in the 91st minute as Toshio Shimakawa was handed his marching orders after receiving his first yellow card in the 72nd minute.

Tosu however held on to the barren draw as they began their J-League Cup campaign with a barren draw and currently sit third in Group A.
