Is Varane right? As Real Madrid announce ACL injury to Militao

Real Madrid announce that Eder Militao has suffered an ACL injury, days after Thibaut Courtois suffered a similar fate.

Real Madrid have confirmed that centre-back Eder Militao has suffered an injury to his Anterior cruciate ligament and is set to go for surgery, which will expectedly rule him out for a significant amount of time.

The Brazilian's injury is the second ACL problem the club has had in weeks, the first being Thibaut Courtois, who got hurt in training and will be out of action for seven to nine months.

The announcement of the injuries comes at a time when conversations are being had about the number of games and minutes footballers are being subjected to, with Manchester United defender Rafael Varane criticising the current system.

Details of Militao's injury

Real Madrid started their league campaign brilliantly, winning a difficult game away at the San Mames 2-1 against Athletic Club.

The celebrations were, however, dampened by an injury to Eder, who limped off in the 50th minute of the game and was subsequently replaced by Antonio Rudiger.

Following tests, Los Blancos announced today via their official channels that the former Porto player has torn the ACL on his left knee and will have to undergo surgery.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the defender is expected to spend up to six months on the sidelines.

What Varane said

Following the communication by the PGMOL, that sees increased injury time added to games, as seen in the World Cup. It has been, or at least a semblance of it has been, implemented in LALIGA as well.

Former Real Madrid defender Varane, now at Manchester United, took to social media to criticise the physical demands footballers are being put through.

An excerpt from his statement says: “From the managers and players, we have shared our concerns for many years now that there are too many games, the schedule is overcrowded, and it’s at a dangerous level for players' physical and mental well-being.”

There are many suggestions that there is a correlation between the recent spate of injuries to footballers and the increased physical demands of the game, and it remains to be seen if reforms will be made.
