Former CAF boss Issa Hayatou died in Paris on Thursday.

Issa Hayatou, the former President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and a towering figure in African football, has passed away at the age of 77.

Issa Hayatou was born in August 9,1946 in Garoua, Cameroon. He was not only a former footballer, he was also one of the most important figures in the development of African football.

It has been confirmed that Hayatou died on Thursday in Paris. His death marks the end of an era for African football, where he served with distinction as the longest-serving CAF President.

Hayatou’s tenure at CAF began in 1988, and he led the organization until March 2017, when he was succeeded by Ahmad Ahmad from Madagascar.

His leadership spanned nearly three decades, during which he played a crucial role in shaping the development and expansion of football across Africa.

His efforts were instrumental in increasing the prominence of the Africa Cup of Nations and enhancing the continent’s representation in global football.

In addition to his influential role at CAF, Hayatou served as the interim President of FIFA from October 2015 to February 2016.

His stewardship during this period was pivotal in overseeing the FIFA elections that resulted in the appointment of Gianni Infantino as the organization's president.

A right-hand man during Hayatou's presidency confirmed his passing, highlighting the profound impact he had on the sport. “We have lost a remarkable leader, a man who devoted his life to the advancement of football in Africa,” a CAF spokesperson remarked. “His legacy will continue to inspire us as we strive to further develop the sport on the continent.”

Issa Hayatou’s contributions to football will be remembered as a significant chapter in the sport’s history, both in Africa and globally.
