Super Eagles star Paul Onuachu has spoken on his move to Southampton, the motivation behind it and how he can help the team avoid relegation.

The deadline day signing comes into the Southampton squad with hopes of moving the club from the bottom of the Premier League table and out of the relegation places.

Onuachu made his debut off the bench for Southampton in a 3-0 defeat to Brentford and now has his sights set on helping the Saints avoid relegation.

Onuachu believes his physicality is perfectly suited to the Premier League and he hopes to make his mark for the Saints.

“Every player dreams of playing in the Premier League, and of course I’m happy to be here. I think I have the physique, I have the height, I have the size. Let the battle begin," Onuachu said.

“Of course it helps a lot, having this height. I’m in there with my height to make a difference in the box, so I think that’s why God gave me this height! If I have the right balls in the box, of course you can see my height will tell," the 6ft 7in striker continued.

Onuacho continued to dream of the possibilities that will arise from his presence in this Southampton team including a potential partnership with James Ward-Prowse.

Southampton's James Ward-Prowse is a set-piece specialist which could benefit Onuachu

“James (Ward-Prowse) is one of the best in the league with his service and his kick, so of course I’m happy to be coming here with someone like him. I think it’s going to really help the team and me a lot,” Onuachu rounded off.

Onuachu fulfils his Premier League dream

“I think it had to be now or never, I think I’m at the right age and I think I had to take this challenge and test myself, to impact my team. Hopefully we do something great together," Onuachu said on his dream move to Southampton.

Onuachu was very prolific for Genk

“It’s a decision I took because coming to Southampton and playing in the Premier League, the best league in the world, I’m coming to really impact my own team – it’s something big for me in my career," Onuacho continued.

The Nigrian striker rounded up, “I have always followed the Premier League, watching it week in week out, seeing the games. It’s a whole different ball game, the intensity, the duels."

Onuachu had been vocal about wanting a big move away from KRC Genk which didn't come even after his 33-goal league season in 2020/21.
