Arteta defends Raya amid calls that the goalkeeper should be dropped
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta rejects claims that David Raya is caving under the pressure of being Arsenal's new first-choice goalkeeper.
A goal for Sevilla from Nemanja Gudelj only served as consolation for the home side as the Gunners held on for all three points to claim their second win of the season.
Arsenal now sit top of their group table, leaving them with an excellent chance of making it to the round of 16.
How it happened
Arsenal were eager to exorcise the demons of their loss to Lens in their last game of the UCL group stage when they took on UEFA Europa League defending champions Sevilla.
The Gunners were the better side in the first half, restricting Sevilla to zero shots in the opening 45 minutes of the match.
The home side did not get their first shot on target in the match until Gudelj’s goal in the 58th minute, and they were already two goals down by that point.
Gabriel Martinelli gave Arsenal the lead in first-half additional time after rounding off a great team counter to make it 1-0.
Gabriel Jesus then doubled the Gunners’ lead after 53 minutes with a spectacular finish, curling the ball into the top corner from the edge of the area.
The Brazilian forward’s night went from great to terrible, however, as he picked up an injury that forced him to leave the pitch in the 85th minute, a worrying sight for Arsenal fans.
Despite losing their inspiration, Arsenal hung on for all three points to move to the summit of Group B.
