Legendary Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho has lauded his former African players, explaining why he enjoyed working with players from the continent
In the world of football, Jose Mourinho is a name that resonates with success, strategy, and sometimes controversy.
However, one aspect of his managerial career that has consistently garnered admiration is his affinity for African players. The 61-year-old Portuguese coach, renowned for his stints at clubs like Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan, recently shared insights into why he has always favored signing African talents.
A Legacy of Loyalty and Purity
Mourinho's tenure at Chelsea is particularly memorable for his work with African stars such as Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, and John Obi Mikel. These players, among others from the African continent, have been pivotal in Mourinho's successful campaigns across Europe. Reflecting on his relationship with these players, Mourinho highlighted two key attributes he admires in African players: loyalty and purity. "To be honest I love the guys, and I feel that the African player is very loyal and very pure," Mourinho expressed.
The bond Mourinho shares with his African players transcends the professional realm, entering a more personal and affectionate territory. He shared a humorous anecdote about Michael Essien referring to him as "daddy," a term that speaks volumes about the close-knit relationships he forms with his players. Despite the jest, Mourinho's fondness for this familial bond is evident. "But you know this affection exists. I love the guys. I love to work with the African players," he said.
Mutual Admiration On and Off the Pitch
Mourinho's success in harnessing the potential of African players isn't just limited to their performance on the pitch. He believes in bringing out the best in them as individuals, which has led to a mutual respect and admiration between him and his players. "I think I take the best out of the guys. I think the guys see me as somebody that really loves them and admire their qualities as players and persons," Mourinho elaborated.
This deep-seated respect and love for African players have been reciprocated, with many of Mourinho's former African players speaking highly of their time under his management. The loyalty, hard work, and dedication that African players bring to the table have always been valued by Mourinho, who has never shied away from praising their contributions to his teams.
Jose Mourinho's career has been decorated with numerous trophies, memorable victories, and a few stumbles. Yet, his approach to building relationships with players, particularly those from Africa, sheds light on a lesser-known side of Mourinho - one that values loyalty, purity, and mutual respect. As he continues his journey in football, Mourinho's affinity for African players remains a testament to his belief in the power of diversity and the strength of personal bonds in achieving professional success.
