José Peseiro has revealed the reason behind his contract renewal with the Super Eagles. The Portuguese tactician took the job in May 2022 and has won 10 of 21 matches, giving him a less than 50 per cent win rate.
However, despite several criticisms, he chose to remain with the team by signing a contract extension in 2023.
Clinching the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title stands atop Pesiro’s list of priorities, and this is the real reason behind his contract renewal despite facing several challenges as the Super Eagles coach.

'A great football nation' — Frank Kessie speaks ahead of AFCON final against Super Eagles
Ivory Coast midfielder Franck Kessié has shared his thoughts ahead of the country's 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final against Nigeria.
"When I signed the contract, I said I wanted to win the AFCON," declared Peseiro, as reported by Brilla, emphasising his unwavering determination to lead his team to victory.
A dream about to come true
Before the start of the tournament, not many pundits and fans tipped the Super Eagles to lift the trophy in Ivory Coast.
However, a water-tight defence that has kept four clean sheets in seven games and a never-say-die attitude has helped the team get to the final.
Nigeria are in their eighth AFCON final, going up against the hosts Ivory Coast, who they had defeated 1-0 during the group stage.
Having lifted the trophy three times, victory in the final will see them add a fourth, while Peseiro achieves his dream of winning the AFCON with Nigeria.
