Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham singled out a backroom staff for praise after England triumphed over Switzerland via penalties.

England midfielder Jude Bellingham has provided some insight into the Three Lions' nerveless penalty shootout attempts to help them beat Switzerland and advance to the semi-final of the European Championships.

Gareth Southgate’s side fought from behind to force the game into extra-time thanks to a stunning strike from Bukayo Saka.

The game subsequently went to penalties, and the English shooters were perfect, with all five players who stepped up finding the back of the net. Switzerland’s Manuel Akanji’s kick was saved by Jordan Pickford, as England won 5-3.

What Bellingham

The Real Madrid star credited their showing at the shootout to former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who is a member of Gareth Southgate's backroom staff.

He explained how England's historically poor record in penalty shootouts weighed on them and how they managed to overcome it.

"It's a first for me to be involved in one, to take one,” Bellingham said, per Goal. “I have awful memories kind of growing up and I think the first Euro that I was really interested in was the one against Italy [Euro 2012] with the dink from [Andrea] Pirlo.

“It kind of stains your memory a little bit; you always think: 'England in penalty shoot-outs, I'm not sure,' but it's really nice to have that experience to add to the locker now.

"I was really confident in my preparation, confident in the things I talked through with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, he's stepped up for us massively. It's the work that he does behind closed doors, with the lads being willing to take on that information, that put us in those situations in order to be able to win."

England will face high-flying Netherlands in the semi-finals, and the winner of the match will square up against the victor between Spain and France in the final of the European Championships.
