Benard Masaba was the hero as Kariobangi Sharks overcame Kakamega Homeboyz in stoppage time to give them all the three points.

Julius Masaba's last-gasp striker from a well excecuted counter attack was enough as Kariobangi Sharks finally overcame the jinx of Kakamega Homeboyz to beat the reining FKF Cup winners at the Kasarani Annex on Sunday afternoon.

Both sides struggled to create chances of any meaningful quality in each other’s half in the first half after a moment of scare by Homeboyz nearly made them concede fairly early.

Gospel Okoth’s attempt over the bar was the best chance Kakamega Homeboyz created in the first half after Davis Kasirye had laid off the ball well for him.

In the second half, Kariobangi Sharks started the better of both sides, with coach William Muluya’s words at half time having a clear effect on the side, who started to test Homeboyz’s resolve.

Homeboyz did however think they had broken the deadlock when Brian Chala headed the ball into the back of the net from a free kick by Estone Esiye, but the goal was amazingly ruled for offside.

Sharks had a second opportunity to score goals in the second half  when Fortune Omoto attempted a right footed shot at goal, but it was not enough to get the better of Farouk Shikalo.

The game would then resemble the damp squib it was for a while until Sharks’ Geoffrey Onyango was found down the left flank before whipping in a dangerous cutback that forced the Homeboyz defence into giving away a corner kick in the 80th minute.

A freekick by Estone Eiye in the 83rd minute blazed over the bar, keeping the score tied . They would get another moments later which would have given them a chance to sail ahead.

Substitute Enoch Masinza’s effort however, did test Sharks custodian Benard Jairo, forcing him into making an excellent save by parrying it away for a corner kick.

Sharks’ substitute  Julius Masaba nearly netted a worldie when he attempted a left footed shot into the back post of Farouk Shikalo’s net, but it sailed just wide of the keeper.

Masaba would be second time lucky as Sharks would break the deadlock from a well taken counter-attacking routine when Stanley Wilson released Geoffrey Onyango, before cutting it back to Masaba who found the back of the net to score what proved to be the winning goal in the 94th minute.

The win now means that Kariobangi Sharks have risen to 12 points and in the top half of the table.
