According to Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Benfica have won the race to sign Di Maria and the World Cup winner will sign a one-year contract to return to Lisbon and the negotiations have reached their final stage.
Fabrizio said, “Ángel Di Maria and his return to Benfica, a matter of days. Time to prepare all the documents, check final details and then sign the contract as revealed yesterday.”
“Di Maria only wanted to return and it’s now just a matter of time. The contract will be until June 2024.”
The Argentine is on the verge of completing his move from Juventus to Benfica on a free transfer.
Di Maria’s career
Di Maria, then 19 years old, initially joined Benfica from Rosario Central in 2007 and then moved to Real Madrid in 2010.
The adaptable star continued to win awards in Madrid, including Real's unprecedented tenth Champions League title in 2014.
