Homeboyz coach, Patrick Odhiambo, criticised officiating after a contentious 1-1 draw against Gor Mahia, highlighting delayed calls and game disruptions.

Kakamega Homeboyz head coach Patrick “Luwowo” Odhiambo has found himself in the middle of a storm, questioning the quality of refereeing after a tantalizing 1-1 draw against Gor Mahia at the Bukhungu Stadium on Sunday.

While both teams battled fiercely on the pitch, it was the man in the middle, center referee Simon Onganga, who found himself at the eye of the post-match storm.

The match saw Gor Mahia take an early lead through a well-struck effort by Benson Omala.

However, Homeboyz were not to be denied as they clawed their way back, equalising just minutes into the second half with Hillary Otieno finding the back of the net.

Abana Abeingo dominated much of the game, showing attacking prowess and creating multiple chances which, unfortunately, they could not convert to seal the victory.

Despite the action on the pitch, it was the officiating that stole the headlines and the former Gor Mahia assistant coach did not mince his words post-match.

"There were late calls in officiating, and at crucial moments, they spoiled the game. When a player was knocked, the referee was slow to blow the whistle, which sometimes led players to retaliate out of emotion," he expressed, clearly frustrated by what he deemed were poor decisions that impacted the game's flow and potential outcome.

"Both teams had equal chances. We're pleased we didn’t lose, but we're also disappointed we didn’t win. The point is satisfactory, but with a little more effort, we could have won.

"While the referee is only human, making the same mistakes repeatedly is unacceptable. Teams, players, and every member of the technical bench invest a lot in preparing for a match. It's disappointing when a referee's decisions disrupt a game."

Such sentiments resonated with many who watched the match, arguing that while referees are indeed humans and can err, consistent mistakes at crucial moments can significantly impact a team's season trajectory.

Referee Simon Onganga and his assistants, George Mwangi and Victor Situk, have yet to respond to the allegations.

However, this incident highlights the perennial debate on the quality and standard of officiating in the league and if measures such as VAR should be introduced to assist match officials.

For Gor Mahia, the draw meant they missed out on clinching their third win of the ongoing season, but they managed to push their points tally to eight.

Homeboyz, who were hunting for their second win of the season, will surely feel that they dropped two points but managed to bring their point total to four.
