It now means all sporting events, such as the annual Kipchoge Keino classic will not be taking place at Kasarani during that period.

Kasarani Stadium will be completely unavailable for use for at least 16-18 months as it undergoes renovations in preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Kasarani Stadium will be inaccessible for use for the next 16-18 months after renovations to make it a significantly upgraded facility commenced, sports CS Ababu Namwamba has confirmed.

On Thursday, Nawamba was inspecting the soon-to-be-closed Bukhungu Stadium, accompanied by Kakamega county boss Fernandes Baraza as the country continues its preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championships which will reportedly take place in East Africa in 2024.

The CS has now confirmed that no activity will be taking place at the Kasarani Stadium while the procedure to upgrade it goes on, including the annual Kipkeino classic, which will now have to take place at another arena.

“You know for instance we have closed Kasarani Stadium already, and so international events like the Kipchoge Keino classic, which is an international event, we have had to find an alternative venue for it (Nyayo Stadium),” Namwamba said.

“All teams that use Kasarani for their home Kenyan Premier League games have had to be relocated to alternative venues because that stadium is going to be inaccessible for at least 16-18 months as we seek to completely upgrade it and overhaul it.”

Namwamba has said that Bukhungu Stadium will also undergo the same.

“I would also urge the teams that use Bukhungu Stadium for football and other activities to make a sacrifice knowing that at the end of the day, they will return to play in a good facility and better environment,” Namwamba added.

Baraza also stressed the importance of both his and the national government working together to ensure it will be ready by the time the tournament is approaching.

“We are extremely delighted to welcome our Sports Cabinet Secretary here in Kakamega for an inspection tour of the stadium.

“The County Government of Kakamega is collaborating with the national government to ensure that the construction of Bukhungu Stadium is ready to host CHAN competition this year.”
