Many branded him the best defender of his generation when he burst onto the scene with the KCCA FC Junior Team in 2017; Reagan Kusumba’s trajectory seemed to be on the right track.

He later joined Vipers Junior Team, where he won the FUFA Junior League in 2018 as a mainstay in defence.

That team was captained by Bobosi Byaruhanga and had players like Ivan ‘Di Maria’ Asaba, Aziz Kayondo and Sula Mpanga, among others.

But lack of playing time at St Mary’s Stadium Kitende forced Kasumba to join Buddo SS and later St Andrews Kaggwa Gombe for his A-Level.

Captaining the school to second at the 2022 Copa Cola Schools’ Championship in Arua. They lost the final 2-0 to Kitende.

Kasumba, who Prosper Sports Agency represents, also has appearances in the Airtel Masaza Cup competitions; he played for Busiro in 2021 and Butambala in 2023.

The central defender cum right back signed a two-year deal with Uganda Premier League Army side UPDF ahead of the 2023/2024 season.

Kasumba feels the time is now to take the bold step and try his luck at the most significant stake of Uganda Football, the Uganda Premier League.

“I feel the time is now, and I am ready,” Kasumba told Pulse Sports before adding.

“It should have been earlier, but I guess it was not mine, and I decided to atleast finish high school a season or two in the Masaza competition, then join the UPL.”

At UPDF, Kasumba is expected to get a warm welcome, and he will be under the guidance of his high school coach at Gombe, Pius Ngabo.

“When coach Pius called me, it was a no-brainer, and I th no I made the right decision as I continued with my devolopment as a player.”

“He is not only a good football coach but also a teacher, and as a player, you need to get better every single day in training, and that is what coach Pius is all about,” Ksumba added.

He also noted: “There is a need to work hard, extra hard; this is the Uganda Premier League, not schools football, but I believe the challenge is also one that is not only demanding but also exciting.”

“You can't get to the next level if you are scared of challenges. You always have to face them head-on, get yourself ready mentally and physically and give your best every time the coach gives you an opportunity,” added Kasumba.

Kasumba will be hoping that his UPL debut goes according to plan and probably help UPDF finish in a much better position than what they achieved last season.

They finished 13th on 27 points surviving elevation by just a point.
