KCCA FC are through to the Stanbic Uganda Cup quarter-finals after defeating Mbarara City 2-1 at the MTN Omondi stadium Friday evening.

Goals from Rogers Mato and substitute Tshisungu Kankonde sandwiched Henry Kitegenyi's left-footed strike to send the home side to the last eight.

KCCA got off to the perfect start and struck through forward Mato in the game's second minute.

The former Proline player curled in from the left side to beat Wycliff Manja in Mbarara's goal.

Mato had the opportunity to make it 2-0 but blasted over the bar as KCCA applied early pressure on the visitors.

Brian Aheebwa headed over the bar off a corner kick by Allan Okello as KCCA searched for a second.

The visitors got back in the game when forward Henry Kitegenyi fed off a superb Okello touch to blast the ball into the roof of the net.

The two sides went into the half-time break at 1-1 and the hosts reacted immediately after by making a change.

Kankonde replaced a struggling Aheebwa at the start the second half.

The Congolese had his tame freekick well handled by the keeper.

There was no denying Kankonde when Okello set him up midway through the second half.

The striker struck KCCA back into the lead, took off his shirt in celebration, amd the goal turned out to be the winner.

Okello had his goal disallowed for offside after he was released by substitute Ivan Mayanja late.

With time running out, Kitegenyi won a physical contest against Peter Magambo and was through on goal, but his shot went over the bar.

The victory takes KCCA closer to an 11th Uganda Cup title, while the Ankole Lions will now have full focus on gaining promotion to the Starttimes Uganda Premier League.
