Kenyan attacker Wilson Waweru has sealed a move to Irish top division side Sligo Rovers for the upcoming 2024 season.
Waweru, who has signed a two-year contract, becomes coach John Russell’s second signing, joining from Galway United after a successful loan spell with Cobh Ramblers where he scored 13 goals last season.
“Wilson is a very good player that I am excited to bring to the club. He came through the Galway United academy and always stood out when he broke through to their first team,” said Russel of his new signing.

FOOTBALL Richard Odada: Harambee Stars midfielder offers early festive cheers to Kajiado community
Christmas will come early for Kajiado residents as Harambee Stars midfielder Richard Odada is set to give back to the community in a big way
“I have tracked his development and he is moving to us after scoring a lot of goals at Cobh last year. He is a natural finisher, he’s quick, strong, and capable of running in behind. He comes to us at a good age and is a player I’m excited to have with us next year.”
Waweru was delighted with the move while revealing where he prefers to play.
“I am very happy to join the club. I see myself as an out and out number 9 and a focal point up top. I was happy my time at Cobh last year particularly with the quality of the goals and assists,” said the striker.
“I am looking forward to the step up in quality in the Premier Division. I feel I am becoming a better player every year, and with the quality of players that will be at the club, I feel I can bring that form with me next year.”
The 22-year-old joined Galway United from Mervue United back in 2017 and went on to make 91 appearances, scoring 18 goals since making his debut in 2018.
Waweru seems to be following in the footsteps of English-born Kenyan striker Jonah Ayunga who once played on loan at Sligo Rovers. Ayunga currently turns out for Scottish Premiership side St Mirren.
