A number of Kenyan players have found success overseas but there are some who experienced chilling experiences abroad. Pulse Sports highlights some of them.

Kenya has produced many players who have gone on to play for clubs either in Europe, Asia or in various clubs around the African continent.

However, while some have been successful, others experienced nightmares abroad despite leaving Kenya with their stocks high.

Whether through an inability to make the grade, a lack of professionalism or patience from the buying club, some of those experiences abroad are ones they would rather forget so quickly.

1. Benson Omala

Benson Omala comes top of the list given his second spell of misfortune happened just recently.

Omala left Gor Mahia last August after emerging as the top scorer in the FKF Premier League with 19 goals in the 2023-24 season and signed for Lebanese side Al-Safa.

He played one match, a friendly, scoring on his debut, but just over two weeks later, he was back in Kenya and never went back.

It later emerged that Benson Omala had a contractual dispute with the Lebanese club and when he was about to resolve it, the country’s league was suspended due to the war in Lebanon.

The league has since resumed this year but Omala did not go back, opting to terminate his deal over what his camp termed non-payment of his dues.

It was the second time Omala’s foray abroad was running into headwinds after a short stint in Sweden in 2021.

Omala joined Swedish division one side Linkoping on a six-month loan move but returned home after two months, claiming he had been played out of position while other reports said he could not cope with the demands.

2. George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo

Another former Gor Mahia player whose career took an unfortunate turn abroad is George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo.

Just after being named the Kenyan Premier League Player of the Year in 2010, Odhiambo moved to Danish club Randers and signed a four-and-a-half-year deal.

However, just a year into his stint in Denmark, he asked to be released from his contract claiming he was “missing home.” He got the release he wanted but that was the end of his foray abroad as stints with Finnish club KuPS and Shirak as well as Ulisses, both in Armenia, yielded little although he found success back at home with both Tusker and Gor Mahia.

3. Clifton Miheso

Clifton Miheso was forced to terminate his contract in South Africa at 'gunpoint.'

Current AFC Leopards captain Clifton Miheso has found success back home with both Ingwe and Kenya Police but in 2017, he had a chilling experience in South Africa.

Miheso joined South African outfit Golden Arrows ahead of the 2016-17 season following an impressive stint with AFC Leopards.

However, what should have been a career milestone turned into a traumatic experience. According to Miheso, the club’s then-CEO, Gordon Masondo, forced him to terminate his contract at gunpoint in January 2017.

Miheso filed a complaint with FIFA in 2017, seeking $22,000 (Ksh2.8 million) in unpaid wages and calling for sanctions against Golden Arrows, later moving to Zambian club Buildcon FC and Olimpico Montijo in Portugal for short stints before returning home to join Gor Mahia, then Police and now Leopards.

4. Derrick Otanga

Striker Derrick Otanga left Kenya in October 2022 to sign for Libyan outfit Al-Ittihad Misrata SC on a one-year deal, having emerged as the top scorer in the FKF Premier League, when he scored 16 goals for KCB.

However, by February 2023, he was back home just four months into his one-year contract, saying things did not turn out as he had expected.

He was received back by Kenya Police, who offered him a chance to kickstart his career, before later ditching them to return to former club KCB.

5. Davis Agesa

Davis Agesa was duped into a transfer to Malaysia and left stranded.

Former Nairobi City Stars striker Davis Agesa left Simba wa Nairobi with hopes of making it big in Malaysia in late 2023.

Then aged 27, Agesa had high hopes of a lucrative deal with a top-flight side in Malaysia, but instead, he found himself stranded in Kuala Lumpur with nothing but an empty promise.

He had been introduced to an Ivorian agent through his former coach in Kenya but the so-called agent did not disclose the name of the Malaysian club.

The player was, however, very interested, hoping his dreams of playing abroad and earning sufficient money to support his family would come true.

Davis Agesa trusted the ‘agent,’ who only communicated with him through social media. He fulfilled all requirements to enable his move to the club in Asia, paying for a visa, passport, ticket, and also an agent fee of 4,000 euro (Ksh542,720 as per current exchange rate).

Agesa expected a return on this investment but the dreams quickly turned into a nightmare as the so-called agent disappeared without a trace, leaving him stranded, and he needed the help of Kenya Footballers Welfare Association to return home.
