The 24-year-old netted his first Bundesliga goal of the season, underpinning his good display on the evening.

Kenyan winger Linton Maina shone brightly and even scored as FC Köln shared the spoils with Augsburg in a thrilling Bundesliga encounter on Saturday afternoon.

Maina looked lively from kick off, looking the most likely of players to put the home side into the lead.

In the 13th minute, he dribbled into the penalty area on the left and passed sharply into the middle, but Augsburg keeper Dahmen was in between to make a vital stop.

Koln kept knocking, and in the 16th minute, Maina himself would then score his first Bundesliga goal of the season.

Philipp Tietz then equalized for the guests in the 25th minute. From a  throw-in, Robert Gumny went along the goal line before landing on the feet of Fredrick  Jensen, who cut it back to Phillip Tietz at the five-pointer for the equalizer.

The game continued being poised, and in the end, both sides had to share the spoils, with FC Koln lucky Augsburg hit the post three times.

Maina, who is born to a Kenyan father and a German mother, had a fine game. He touched the ball 47 times, attempting 24 out of 27 successful passes. He made one key pass that gathered an expected assist ratio of 0.16.

His hunger to get a goal for himself was underpinned by the fact he attempted two shots, with both of them being on target.

Speaking after the match, head coach Steffen Baumgart expressed dissatisfaction that his side should have been more clinical, insisting Maina and the rest of his fellow attacking charges should have been even more composed in front of the goal.

There was a bit of calm missing in the offensive actions. Then you realize that you have to work for security. I would start by ensuring that the boys continue to have security. But we’ve been talking about this for a while.”
