He is reported to be among the players that the 13-time Uganda Premier League champions hope to build their project around, as they seek a return to their glory days.

Uganda Cranes defender Geoffrey Wasswa is set to extend his stay at KCCA FC for an additional two years, following the expiry of his contract.

The versed defender has been the subject of speculation linking him away from the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, but sources close to the player have apparently confirmed a renewal is close.

"Wasswa is staying at Lugogo 100% because the club sees him as a key part of their team with the new coach," preferring anonymity, a source close to the player told this website.

There were no attempts to reach the player for confirmation as he is with the Cranes team preparing for an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Algeria on Sunday in Douala, Cameroon.

However, the source went on to confirm there were approaches from within the country and out, but Wasswa was happy to stay.

"It's true, there were parties interested but Wasswa wants to stay. Signing will be sooner than later."

The talented versatile defender has previously featured for boyhood side Vipers SC and Uganda Premier League record holders SC Villa

Wasswa, who is also a product of the FUFA Juniors League, is a former Uganda Cup and Uganda Premier League champion with Vipers.

The league title has evaded Lugogo for the past four years, with their last glory coming in the 2018/19 season under Mike Mutebi.

They will also be back at the continent, in the CAF Confederation Cup which they confirmed participation, having finished second in the recently concluded league campaign.
