Tella and Leverkusen continue run
Nigeria winger Tella started on the bench before coming on for the league leaders in the Rhine derby clash.
Leverkusen opened the scoring through wingback Jeremie Frimpong in the first half after Cologne went down to 10 men.
Tella then replaced goalscorer Frimpong just before the second half, with the Ghanaian already on a yellow card.
The Super Eagles star helped maintain Leverkusen's control as they sealed the three points thanks to Alex Grimaldo's strike in the 72nd minute.
It was a dominant display from manager Xabi Alonso's side against their local rivals.
The victory extends Leverkusen's remarkable unbeaten run to 34 league matches this season, the most in Bundesliga history.
They now hold a 10-point advantage over defending champions Bayern Munich at the Bundesliga summit with just 10 games remaining.
Tella produced a solid performance off the bench to help Leverkusen claim local bragging rights and edge closer to a first German title since 1993.
The 23-year-old will hope for more minutes as the league leaders look to seal an unlikely triumph in the closing stages.
