Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has critisised Luis Rubiales and apologised for applauding.

The manager of the Spanish men's national team, Luis de la Fuente, has apologised for applauding Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales during his shocking speech at the RFEF Extraordinary General Assembly to discuss the kiss scandal.

The 62-year-old manager was hired to be Spain's boss in January this year after Luis Enrique left the role following a disappointing World Cup campaign.

What has happened

Following intense pressure from the public for Luis Rubiales to retire after he kissed Jennifer Hermoso on the lips at the FIFA Women's World Cup medal ceremony, the RFEF held an extraordinary general assembly.

Although it was widely assumed that the administrator would resign at the assembly, he announced that he would be continuing in the role and was applauded by members in attendance, including De La Fuente.

Luis De la Fuente’s apology

The coach has publicly criticised Rubiales’s act, leading many to fire back at him, asking why he applauded his boss when he had reservations.

He has now come out to apologise, saying it was a human error.

“Almost all of us RFEF (Spanish Football Federation) workers went in there thinking that we were going to see the dismissal of a president, and we found something completely different," he said, per Goal.

"It was not easy to digest. It was a situation that overwhelmed me. I have not felt betrayed by Luis Rubiales, but I arrived thinking that it was going to be a resignation meeting, and we were shocked when we saw that it was not this way.

"I don't have to resign; I have to ask for forgiveness. I made a mistake—an inexcusable human error. If I could go back, I wouldn't commit that act again. I am on the side of equality and respect. We all have to improve in terms of equality, and I am the first," he added.
