Barcelona might get some reprieve in their ongoing refereeing scandal as a key witness against them is accused of providing false evidence to support his claims
LaLiga giants Barcelona have received a boost in the Negreira fiasco and court case, where they were accused of paying referees for protection under three different club presidents.
Barcelona’s Negreira case continues
Barcelona were accused of making cash gifts to referees through the former chief of the referees association, Enriquez Negreira, in order to receive favourable treatment in LaLiga, which is a clear violation of the league’s rules.
LaLiga president Javier Tebas is at the forefront of the case against Barcelona and was crucial to the matter reaching the Spanish prosecutors and courts, and his motivation for his persistence has allegedly landed him in hot water.
Tebas has now been accused of misleading prosecutors after providing supposedly false evidence during the trials in order to secure a conviction against Barcelona.
Tebas accused of personal vendetta against Barcelona
According to a report from Cronica Libre in conjunction with La Vanguardia, Tebas provided a letter to the prosecution from former Barcelona director of football Josep Contreras, which is supposed to have been addressed to former club presidents Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu.
While the authenticity of the letter is not in question, the claims that Tebas reportedly made about the letter referencing former Barcelona presidents appear to be false, as neither Rosell nor Bartomeu had taken office at the time when the letter was written.
According to Cronica Libre investigations, the names in the letter, which bear resemblance to the names of the former Barcelona presidents, are referring to workers and associates of Contreras, who have no bearing on the Catalan club.
Tebas has now faced significant backlash since the report was released and has been accused of leading a witch hunt against the Blaugrana.
