Ex-Real Madrid star snubs Mbappe and Vinicius, names the best player in the world
Former Real Madrid player Van der Vaart has named the best footballer in the world right now.
During a recent appearance at the Club World Championship, Ronaldo shared his views with Marca, noting that while he respects Rodri's achievements, Vinicius was more decisive throughout the past season.
"Without detracting from Rodri, Vinicius had to win the Ballon d'Or... Vinicius has been much more decisive last season,” he told Marca.
Rodri, who plays for Manchester City and led Spain to victory in Euro 2024, won the Ballon d'Or by a narrow margin of 41 votes over Vinicius Jr. Despite this, many in football, including fellow players and fans, have voiced their support for Vinicius as the rightful winner.
The controversy surrounding the award has intensified, with Rodri attempting to diffuse tensions by expressing respect for Vinicius and acknowledging the rivalry as part of football culture.
Vinicius, who had an outstanding season with Real Madrid—scoring 24 goals and providing 11 assists—opted not to attend the ceremony alongside his club teammates after it became clear he would not win.
This decision echoed previous instances where players boycotted awards due to perceived injustices.
Ronaldo's comments have reignited debates about the disputed award and others are determined in football and whether they accurately reflect player contributions on the field.
