The Gunners set a new Champions League record, becoming the first team to score seven awya goals in a Champions League knockout round

How it happened

Arsenal raced into a two-goal lead thanks to Jurrien Timber and Ethan Nwaneri before the midway point of the first half but endured a tense moment when youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly escaped a second yellow card after back-to-back fouls.

After the incident was settled, Arsenal added a third goal through Mikel Merino, with VAR needing several minutes to rule out possible offside.

PSV responded with a goal of their own through Noa Lang from the penalty spot after Thomas Partey was penalised for a foul, but the strike turned out to be a consolation as the Gunners continued their onslaught after the half-time break.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard scored a brace on either side of Leandro Trossard's goal, before setting up Riccardo Calafiori for the Gunners' seventh goal of the game.

Arsenal's record win means that the second leg at the Emirates Stadium is now a mere formality, with the Gunners guaranteed of a quarterfinal tie against either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid.
