Leopards fans remain banned following the chaos that occurred during a league match against Kakamega Homeboyz.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba and his Information and Communication counterpart Eliud Owalo have pleaded with the Football Kenya Federation to lift the ban on AFC Leopards fans.

Ingwe’s supporters were banned from stadiums following an eruption of chaos at Bukhungu Stadium in April. Ahead of Sunday’s Mashemeji Derby, Namwamba and Owalo want the ban lifted.

"I've asked FKF to lift the ban on fans," Namwamba said on Saturday when he met AFC Leopards ahead of their match against arch-rivals Gor Mahia at Nyayo Stadium.

"I want to ask all the AFC Leopards fans to fill the stadium tomorrow (Sunday). Don't stay back, because the game is all about atmosphere, and the fans make up the atmosphere."

"The thrill is the intensity of rivalry," said Owalo, who hosted Ingwe.

"We cannot have a derby if a section of the fans is suppressed. FKF should consider allowing AFC Leopards fans into the stadium so that if there is any sanction, then it should take place after the derby."

Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are set to make a joint bid to host the Africa Cup of Nations finals in 2027, and Namwamba wants the local teams to become competitive in order to help the Harambee Stars should AFCON be held in the East African region.

"We must also make sure that we build a competitive team for AFCON 2027, it will be pointless to win a bid and have a team that is not competitive," the former Budalangi Member of Parliament said.

He further asked corporations to sponsor local teams that have had to deal with financial challenges.

"I want to assure our corporate sponsors that we are cleaning up this space," he concluded.

"We are sorting out the sports arena. Bring your money back to our sport. Support our football clubs. Football guarantees you idols at a scale that no other sport can guarantee you."

Namwamba further said the ministry was working to introduce a special package to cushion the clubs from monetary challenges.
