Newcastle United vs Arsenal: The Controversial Goal
The incident in question happened during the highly explosive clash between Newcastle United and Arsenal at St. James’ Park on Saturday evening.
Just after the hour mark, Joelinton appeared to have pushed defender Gabriel before setting up Anthony Gordon for the disputed winner to give the Magpies a decisive win.
The decision by the match officials to award the goal despite a triple appeal from Arsenal has sparked intense debate, with some assertions that the goal should have been disallowed for either a foul, goal kick or offside.
The Gunners, led by manager, Mikel Arteta have since reacted to the incident, with the coach furious in what he described as a ‘disgraceful’ and ‘embarrassing’ situation that made him sick.
Arsenal also released a statement to support their manager as reported by Pulse Sports Nigeria.
Owen’s Criticises Arsenal
As the controversy raged on, former Newcastle United star, Owen, voiced his displeasure with how Arteta and Arsenal have handled the situation.
The Premier League legend accused the Gunners of being damaging and classless with their behaviours which he believes has done more damage to the game than the goal scored.
“The @NUFC v @Arsenal game yesterday was a brilliant watch,” Owen posted on X.com. “Two top teams going at it.”
“The only (in his words) ‘embarrassing’ and ‘disgraceful’ thing about it was Arteta’s behaviour. A common occurrence that damages the game more than any incorrect decision. For his club to now release a statement moaning about the standard of officiating is poor and sadly for a team of Arsenals standing, totally classless,” he added.
At the time of this report, the Arsenal are yet to respond to Owen’s outburst but the incident continues to take centre stage as fans and pundits continue to weigh in on the matter.
