Salah or Van Dijk: Liverpool legend picks the Reds’ most valuable player
Steve Nicol has chosen which star player Liverpool should let go in the summer if necessary.
Liverpool slip-up in Premier League title race
Jurgen Klopp’s men needed to beat Erik ten Hag’s side at Old Trafford to return to the top of the standings but contrived to miss a host of chances against their age-old rivals.
While Salah was to secure a point from 12 yards, the Egypt international’s misses did not go unnoticed as the Reds dropped points in the run-in.
Why did Nicol slate Salah?
The former Liverpool defender recognised that the three-time Golden Boot winner previously had injury issues but remains disappointed that the forward’s goalscoring form has deserted him at the worst time.
“I’m not so sure that Klopp can figure it out,” said Nicol on ESPN. “Klopp has done everything to get Liverpool in this position with everything that has happened this season, the changes, the injuries, the games.
“There is one thing that a coach can’t do; he can’t give a player form. And right now, at least two of Liverpool’s front three are out of form. Mo Salah is completely out of form, and when you’re out of form, everything you do becomes harder.”
The Premier League title run-in: What comes next for Liverpool?
While the Reds face a Europa League doubleheader in the next 10 days against Atalanta, their priority is reigning supreme in the Premier League.
Liverpool’s next two league fixtures are seemingly winnable on paper — Crystal Palace at Anfield and Fulham on the road. Table-topping Arsenal host Aston Villa and play Wolverhampton Wanderers away at Molineux, while Manchester City host Luton Town and travel to Brighton & Hove Albion.
