Real Madrid and Germany's Toni Kroos has been singled out for praise by a Liverpool defender after an inspiring display against Scotland in the EURO 2024 opener.

In a shocking display, Scotland were thrashed 5-1 by Germany in their EURO 2024 opener, and Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has not held back in his praise of Real Madrid midfield maestro Toni Kroos.

Kroos, 34, was the star of the show as Germany ran riot, with goals from Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz, Niclas Fullkrug and Emre Can sealing a comprehensive victory for the hosts.

Scotland captain Robertson, who also plays for Liverpool, did not mince his words when discussing Kroos' influence on the game, branding the German's passing ability as 'probably the best in the world'.

“We didn't put enough pressure on the ball and Toni Kroos pretty much dictated everything,” a dejected Robertson said after the match.

‘“His passing ability is probably the best in the world and when you allow a player like that on the ball and you don't get close to him, unfortunately, he's going to pick out the right passes.”

The Liverpool star admitted that Scotland's performance was hugely disappointing, but insisted that they must now 'put it behind us and move on quickly' ahead of their next Group A clash.

“It is what it is, we can't change it now. It's so disappointing but, come tomorrow, we have to put it behind us and move on quickly,” he added according to UEFA.com

Kroos, who won his sixth Champions League title with Real Madrid this season, was in inspired form as Germany got their EURO 2024 campaign off to the perfect start in front of their home fans.

The midfield maestro orchestrated proceedings from the middle of the park, constantly picking out his teammates with pinpoint passes and controlling the tempo of the game.

His virtuoso display saw him complete 101 of 102 passes, creating the most chances (4), key passes (4) and playing an incredible part in the build-up to Wirtz’s opener in the first half.

Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala were also in fine form against Scotland.

This earned him not just a deserved standing ovation when he was substituted in the second half but also widespread praise, with Robertson the latest high-profile figure to wax lyrical about the German's unparalleled skills.
